Many people, for different reasons, request wheelchair assistance as they move through New York’s busy airports. This may seem like a good idea for someone who has difficulty walking the long distances required to move through the airport. But wait. If you are one of these people, this post may be of interest to you.
In the last year or so, we have been contacted by two (2) people who have been injured in wheelchair incidents in a New York airport. In both cases, the passengers were thrown out of the wheelchairs. The wheelchair operators were not paying attention as the wheelchair traveled. As they were pushing the wheelchairs they struck an irregularity in the floor. The wheelchair suddenly stopped due to the floor irregularity and the passenger fell forward. In both cases, the passengers were hurt.
It seems strange that incidents like this happen, but surprisingly, they seem to happen with some frequency. We are writing this blog entry so that if you are using airport wheelchair service, you can be aware of this danger which appears to be unforseeable to the ordinary airline passenger.
